Welcome back to the Van Waal Agronomy Series: Seed to Grain Solutions 360! Today, we’re out in the field planting corn, one of the best days of the year. In this episode, we’ll be discussing the equipment we’re using and the critical aspect of seed-to-soil contact.
Meet Scott Meldrum, who will be explaining the planter and tractor we’re using today. We’ve got a model year 22 8RX 410 John Deere tractor, the only fixed-frame four-track tractor on the market. This tractor comes equipped with integrated liquid tanks capable of carrying a thousand gallons of liquid, which can then be pumped back to the planter. The tractor handles the 24-row planter very well.
Moving towards the rear of the tractor, we have a model year 22 John Deere 24-row 30-inch spacing ExactEmerge planter. This planter stands out for its ExactRate liquid system, allowing us to apply up to 30 gallons per acre. It features frame-mounted coulters for higher rates and can accommodate in-furrow applications for lower rates. The ExactMerge planter enables us to plant at speeds of up to 10 miles per hour while maintaining perfect singulation and seed spacing.
Additionally, the planter is equipped with new tracks developed through a joint venture between John Deere and Susie Tracks, aimed at reducing ground compaction as we move through the field. Today, we’ll be conducting nitrogen studies to examine different rates of starter nitrogen at planting and their potential impact on yield.
After discussing the equipment, we moved on to the crucial step of digging into the soil to check the seed depth. Planting at a consistent two-inch seed depth is key to ensuring uniform emergence and ultimately higher yields. We use hydraulic downforce on the planter to maintain this depth throughout the field.
Once the depth is confirmed, we focus on closing the trench properly. We use two rubber closing wheels to pack the soil around the seed, ensuring excellent seed-to-soil contact. Remember, consistent depth and proper trench closure are essential for optimal plant emergence and, ultimately, a successful harvest.
