Life as a Female Farmer: A Personal Journey
As a female dairy farmer for over 26 years, I’ve learned to embrace my role in agriculture with confidence and pride. My journey began unexpectedly, as I didn’t grow up on a farm but found my passion for farming while attending Sterling College.
Early Beginnings
After completing my bachelor’s degree at UVM, I married my husband, Scott, who had a strong desire to return to his family farm. Together, we embarked on this journey, eventually raising our three children on the farm while managing a herd of over 50 cows.
Challenges and Rewards
Despite the challenges of juggling farm work and family life, I’ve always been proud of raising healthy children in a farming environment. While there were late meals and tired moments on an old couch in the milking parlor, the rewards of providing valuable and nutritious food for others far outweigh the struggles.
Community and Connection
Being a part of the farming community has been a source of strength and support for me. Through social media, I aim to share the daily realities of farm life, hoping to bridge the gap between farmers and those less connected to agriculture.
A Commitment to Farming
Choosing a life in farming is not for everyone, but for me, it’s a fulfilling and meaningful existence. I find inspiration in the outdoors, the animals, and the knowledge that we are contributing to feeding others with a valuable and nutritious product.
Ultimately, being a female farmer has its challenges, but the rewards and sense of purpose make it all worthwhile. I invite you to explore the world of farming, whether as a seasoned farmer or a curious beginner, and discover the beauty and significance of this way of life.
