The Little Inventors Challenge mission Protector Oceans, led by Anserk in partnership with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, aims to address the issue of ocean pollution and its impact on the environment through innovative inventions. With over 300 million tons of plastics produced yearly, most of which ends up in the ocean, and oil pollution from ships and offshore drilling, there is a pressing need for solutions to protect our oceans. By entering the challenge and creating inventions to prevent trash and oil spills, as well as reduce underwater noise, individuals can contribute to a cleaner and healthier ocean ecosystem. Canada’s initiative to ban single-use plastics and lead the Ocean Plastics Charter sets an example for global action. 15 winning invention ideas will be realized to mark the launch of the Decade of Ocean Science in 2021, encouraging creativity and sustainable solutions to combat ocean pollution. The Ocean’s Call for Help

Our oceans are in trouble due to pollution, with over 300 million tons of plastics produced annually, 8 million tons of which end up in the oceans. Chemical pollution from various sources like pesticides, fertilizers, industrial waste, and household sewage also contributes to the degradation of marine ecosystems. The result? Giant garbage patches, oil spills from ships and offshore drilling, and increased noise pollution underwater.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest of its kind in the world, contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of trash and covers an area the size of Quebec. This massive accumulation of garbage underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to protect our oceans.

Oil Spills and Their Consequences

Oil spills from various sources including cars, lawnmowers, and shipping vessels pose a significant threat to marine life. Cleaning up oil spills is a challenging task that often involves more pollution. It’s time to rethink how we deal with oil spills and prevent them from happening in the first place.

Taking Action to Save Our Oceans

As individuals, we all have a role to play in protecting the oceans. By coming up with creative ideas to reduce trash, prevent oil spills, and decrease underwater noise, we can contribute to a healthier marine environment. Governments, businesses, and organizations must also do their part by adopting sustainable practices and policies, such as Canada’s plans to ban single-use plastics by 2021.
